Testimonials

WMS Founder
Shandré Smith
“We founded the Wits Moot Court Society because we identified a need for a Moot Society at Wits. Having come from a mooting background, I understood the importance of participating in moot court competitions during your studies.

The Moot Society was founded to provide training on written and oral advocacy which are critical and fundamental skills for law school. Additionally, it aimed to introduce internal Moot Court Competitions to provide law students at Wits with mooting experience and exposure. The Moot Society intended to provide Wits students with access and support to compete in a range of international Moot Court Competitions.
2025 marks the 6th anniversary of the Moot Society at Wits and it is refreshingly rewarding to witness how the Society has grown, the number of internal Moot Court Competitions which the Society has hosted, the number of international Moot Court Competitions the Moot Society has not only participated in but has performed exceptionally well in and the quality of Mooters the Moot Society has produced. Our hopes and what we envisioned when we started the society have been surpassed and I know that it can only get even better here from here onwards!"

WMS 2024 Chairperson
Emilio Giangregorio
“Moot Court is a globally renowned co-curricular activity practiced at many law schools. Participants engage in simulated legal proceedings ranging from researching and drafting heads of arguments to presenting oral arguments in arbitration proceedings in front of a bench of judges.

Moot Court and Wits:
The Wits Moot Court Society is notorious for participating in the most competitive and prestigious court competitions globally. From international moot court competitions including Jessup, the IBA International Criminal Court, and Price Media Moot to national moots such as the Centre for Child Law, Kate O’Reagan, and CALS Public Interest Law Moot—we remain active in all, including our very own internal moots, specifically the Thulamela Chambers and Advocates Group 21 Moot Court Competition.

At the heart of Wits Moot Court Society we endeavour to train our members in the intricacies of advocacy whilst encouraging them to craft their skills into mastery by competing".
